ASL-English Interpretation

Now accepting applications for summer 2010

The American Sign Language-English Interpretation program is an online (with summer onsite requirements), 11-semester, baccalaureate degree program that prepares majors to provide competent interpreting services between individuals who are deaf and use ASL as their primary means of communication, and individuals who are not deaf and do not know sign language. This program is designed as a comprehensive 4-year degree program. The major is comprised of 62 credit hours of advanced ASL, interpreting theory and skills courses, with an additional 18 credits in one of four emphasis areas: community, educational, general or legal interpreting.  The 40 credit hours of liberal arts core requirements (e.g., English, math, science) are typically taken with advisement at the student's local college/university and transferred to UNC.  The UNC-DO IT Center teaching staff is selected from across North America for their expertise in both content area and distance education-they are the best of the best!

Designed for individuals with basic ASL competency who are starting their academic preparation, the program currently serves working interpreters as well (e.g., completed a 2-year interpreter training program, extensive work experiences).  Each applicant is screened to determine appropriate placement in the program.
