The Deafness and Sexuality Project of Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania presents 7 workshops for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Communities:

q      Sexuality 101Examining Comfort and Knowledge:  This workshop is for professionals who work with the Deaf and hard of hearing communities.  It will cover defining sexuality, sexual development, comfort with sexuality, dealing with sensitive issues, and answering tough questions. It is an interactive workshop that will provide participants with up-to-date facts.  ACT 48 credits offered. 

March 5, 2007                9:00 – 4:00

q      STEPS for the Deaf:  Facilitating, Responding, Teaching: This workshop will help educators working with the Deaf and hard of hearing to increase knowledge, comfort and skill with implementing sexuality education with youth ages 9-13.  Act 48 credits provided.

q      Deaf Teen Times:  Facilitating, Responding, Teaching: This workshop will help educators working with the Deaf and hard of hearing to increase knowledge, comfort and skill with implementing sexuality education into the high school classroom.  Act 48 credits offered.

q      HIV and Interpreting:  This workshop will provide Deaf and hearing interpreters the opportunity to examine HIV/AIDS information, issues and interpreting skills.  It is a serious topic covered in a fun way.  RID CEUs offered. Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDIs) are Welcome

February 9-10, 2007       9:00 – 4:00

q      STD Update for Interpreters of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing:  Do you know what LGV, Molluscum and Chancroid are?  What about the latest on Human Papilloma Virus?  This workshop will help Deaf and hearing interpreters increase knowledge, comfort and skill with interpreting about sexually transmitted diseases. RID CEUs offered. Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDIs) are Welcome

q      Contraceptive Update for Interpreters of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Do you know about Essure, the IUS, and Fem Cap?  If not, come and join us!  This workshop will help Deaf and hearing interpreters increase knowledge, comfort and skill with interpreting information about contraceptive/birth control methods.  RID CEUs offered.  Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDIs) are Welcome

April 14, 2007    9:00 – 3:00

q      Signing for Sexuality for Interpreters of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing:  Do you know what skin hunger, attraction template, and the sexual response cycle are?  Do you know the signs for the genitals, transgender, sexual assault (and more!)?  This workshop will provide Deaf and hearing interpreters the opportunity to increase knowledge of sexuality signs, explore comfort with interpreting sexuality situations and apply learning to skill development.  In addition, time will also be devoted to discussing how to interpreter for domestic violence and sexual abuse related situations.  It’s an interactive workshop where interpreters can get a lot of information in a safe way.  RID CEUs offered.  Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDIs) are Welcome

August 24-25, 2007    9:00 – 4:00

Scholarships are offered for all workshops.  Sign language proficiency is required for participation.

These workshops offered in Philadelphia , PA , but are able to be hosted elsewhere.

Celebrating 75 years of reproductive health services and human sexuality education

 
The RSA Mid-America Regional Interpreter Education (MARIE) Center, a U.S. Dept. of Education federal grant to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock – Interpreter Education Program in partnership with the University of Northern Colorado – DO IT Center, is delighted to announce that we will offer the Diagnostic Assessment and Skills Training Series beginning in July 2006!
 
This is a 3 semester program (Fall, Spring, and Summer) for individualized skill development to meet the needs of novice through nationally certified interpreters. Participants receive feedback from the national experts and they will have access to colleagues from across the United States via distance technologies.  The interpreters applying to this program must meet the following requirements:
§         3 years of experience working as an interpreter
§         Internet access and email
§         Windows 2000 or higher
§         Access to a TV and VCR
§         Access to a VHS camcorder for taping skills work
 
Here are a few interesting highlights:
§         Cost is $175.00 per credit hour  (Fall 2006 rate) plus books and materials
§         Curriculum is taught by national experts
§         RID Professional Studies CEUs (13.5) and undergraduate credits (9.0) from the University of Northern Colorado are awarded
