A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Darla Sullins

                                   February 2006

I hope this newsletter finds you in warmer weather, and excited about the upcoming conference/workshop!  It is always a treat to assemble twice a year for the purpose of expanding our knowledge, friendships, and waistline!  Mark down April 21-23 on your calendars. WYRID and Wyoming's Outreach Services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing will hold a joint conference/workshop in Casper. All the details have not been finalized yet, so keep your eye out for a flyer in the weeks to come.  (Hint: ASL workshop & a vision planning section on the future of our profession).

On June 24, 2006, the EIPA is coming to Casper!  Be sure you sign up quickly because last year there was a waiting list. You can download the necessary forms by going to: http://www.ed.arizona.edu/ask12/?CFID=89668&CFTOKEN=61398308

On the right side, click on the word "ASK" where it says "ASK: EIPA - Registration Fee". You will find Casper listed by the test date.

Need a little extra motivation to take the EIPA? Here is some good rationale:

  • It provides a diagnostic workup that shows your areas of strengths, plus suggestions for improvement.

  • It demonstrates your commitment to the profession of interpreting.

  • RID is presently considering bringing the EIPA into RID Certification.

  • The Wyoming DVR Checklist for interpreters will include the EIPA at a 3.5

If you are interested in resources to help improve your expressive and receptive skills, here are two:

Denise Morris is the coordinator for the newly established Educational Interpreter Committee. She will clarify the purpose of this committee with short informational presentation at the April workshop. With all the changes happening in the educational interpreting profession, this is  a well-timed committee. We would like to thank Denise for spearheading this endeavor.

A BIG thank-you to the DVR Checklist Committee for their diligent effort in making sure the contract interpreters have with DVR is fair and balanced for the next 2-year term. The Checklist Committee consists of Connie Norwood, Connie White, Gail Schenfisch, Toni Bell and John Chambers. The DVR Checklist Coordinator for the next 2-year cycle is Toni Bell.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at the April workshop! Keep warm!!!
