RID Interpreters in Educational and Instructional Settings

The Distance Opportunities for Interpreter Training Center (DO IT) and the University of Northern Colorado are promoting two interpreter training programs that may be of interest to your constituency; the new Bachelor of Arts in American Sign Language-English Interpreting and the Diagnostic Assessment and Skills Professional Development Training Series.

This Bachelor of Arts in ASL - English Interpretation Program is a unique program in that it has been designed for distance delivery through the DO IT Center to impact the national need for highly qualified ASL-English interpreters. As well, it has been designed for the purpose of preparing confident interpreter candidates to achieve national certification and to enter the profession as competent, autonomous practitioners.

The Diagnostic Assessment and Skills Training Series is a 3 semester program designed to help the interpreter analyze and improve both their ASL to English and English to ASL competencies. This professional development series has been developed to meet the needs of novice interpreters through nationally certified interpreters. This series is offered in collaboration with the RSA Mid-America Regional Interpreter Education (MARIE) Center.

In an effort to serve the community, we will be posting upcoming events, workshops, seminars, etc. Click on the month to obtain information about upcoming activities.  If you have information about events you would like listed, please contact the webmaster

    CruisEUs 2010

    http://cruiseus.net

with Connie George Travel and Holland America

Imagine standing on your private verandah and watching whales breach and eagles soar. Imagine being among the lucky few to spend a whole day in Glacier Bay National Park. Imagine traveling through Alaska’s sublime beauty and frontier ports in unsurpassed luxury and comfort.  Discover Wrangell-St. Elias, North America's largest national park, and experience the colossal Hubbard Glacier and St. Elias Mountain Range. Take a dogsled adventure in Juneau, learn about Tlingit culture in Sitka, flightsee over Misty Fjords National Monument in Ketchikan and visit Butchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia. Set your adventurous spirit free on an Alaskan Explorer cruise vacation.

An Alaskan cruise vacation is "almost" perfect...making it PERFECT would be while at all these great locations, also attending workshops presented by Crom Saunders and Alan Marcus.

Costs for CruisEUs 2010 Workshops  $150 plus your cabin costs.

We will have 12-18 hours of CEUs offered in a classroom environment with the workshop presenter being there on the cruise.

A few names you will see are Crom Saunders, Keith Wann, Jennifer Jacobs, Windell Smith, Jr., and Dr. Alan Marcus, among others.

In addition, we are offering approximately 30 different pre-recorded, CEU approved, workshops that you can watch

on your own personal laptop.  We'll have a listing of these on our website soon.

This is a nice option in the event that you would rather earn CEUs while watching for whales or looking at icebergs as we pass.

We will not be offering 'live' workshops while we're in port, however, you are always welcome to watch a DVD workshop whenever you'd like.  For example, if you've already been to a specific port and would prefer to stay on the ship, you might want to spend some time taking one of the workshops we have to offer.

Effective Team Interpreting: Working your way through the styles, philosophies, and attitudes

    Wednesday, August 11th 1pm-9pm
    Thursday, August 12th 9am-1pm

    Offered by Betty Colonomos
Sponsored by RID's Interpreters with Deaf Parents (IDP) Member Section and held as a pre-conference event to the RID Region I conference held in Albany, NY from August 12-15, 2010.

Held at the Albany Marriott, Albany, NY

This 10 hour (1.0 CEU) workshop will focus on the challenges involved when working with a team.  If you were similarly trained or share similar models, it is more likely you will have a satisfactory experience.  If you are working with someone who differs from your approach and beliefs, what types of decisions need to be made?  If you are working at a conference with a large team of interpreters who you may or may not know or have worked with before, what options are available?

Participants and presenter will be actively involved in working groups and larger group discussion in an effort to help find answers and offer strategies for resolution.  Scenarios will help practice and evaluate certain strategies.  Group development of a matrix of factors may assist agencies in assigning team members.

This workshop is open to all interpreters. Deaf, hearing, deaf parented or not…

Keep your eyes peeled, more info to come.

    SYNERGY - Moving Forward Together

Scotland is proud to host the next conference of the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters (efsli), to be held at the Radisson Hotel, Glasgow, from 11th - 12th September 2010.

Looking back on the development of the profession of interpreters of signed languages, can we be satisfied that we are fully equipped for the challenges and changes the future will bring? Are the goals and values of interpreter practitioners and educators shared by providers and service users?

This conference will explore the missing links at both a micro and macro level, and encourage reflection on the skills and knowledge necessary to equip signed language interpreters from all parts of Europe for a constantly evolving environment

It is expected that the Conference languages will be spoken English, British Sign Language, International Sign, spoken French and spoken Russian, but this is still to be finally confirmed. All presenters who wish to use a different spoken or signed language will have to supply their own interpreter.
