INTERPRETER LAWS
Deaf Persons; right enumerated, 5-1-109
- In all civil or criminal cases in which a deaf or mute person is a part or
in a grand jury proceeding where the person is a witness, the judge shall,
upon petition, appoint a qualified interpreter to assist the court and deaf
person during the proceedings. The cost of the interpreter may be assessed
as court costs. When a person either waives his rights or the interrogation
is conducted entiredly in writing, he shall not be required to submit to
interrogation or make a statement unless the interpreter is present. The
interpreter appointed under this statute shall serve both the deaf or mute
person and the court, shall in no way offer legal counsel, advise or assist
the deaf person or mute person.
